Across northern Europe some 60 million motorists, one in four, fits 'Winter Tyres' as the cold months loom each year. The snow and ice of recent British winters, fitting specialised tyres for safer cold weather motoring is catching on here too.

Tests conducted in 2010 by Britain's biggest selling weekly car magazine, Auto Express/ proved the benefits of winter tyres. In one example a winter tyre achieved a stopping distance 25 metres (six car lengths) shorter than a summer tyre on snow.

Auto Express also measured the traction when accelerating, noting that the winter tyre gripped with a performance well ahead of it's rivals. In fact, compared to the comparison conventional tyre it had over three times the grip.

Winter tyres have a tread pattern designed to cope with snow & ice, as well as slush and cold rain. They are also safer than a standard tyre in cold, dry conditions because the tread compound heats up at lower rolling temperatures to create grip in low temperatures, below 7 degress centigrade. The average temperature in the UK between November and March is below 7 degrees.

In wet and wintery conditions accidents happen at almost twice the rate as in the dry, 48% of car accidents in the UK are as a result of skidding. Thanks to the specific cold weather tyre tread pattern design the adhesion on dangerous wet, snowy and icy surfaces is maximised.
